DHAKA, May 15, 2017 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Mayor Annisul Huq today said the city will change in every month as the development of the city corporation area is getting visible gradually.
"We have been making utmost efforts for the last two years to make the city more suitable for dwelling," he told a view-exchange meeting with media personalities at Hotel Sonargaon marking the second anniversary of his assuming office.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by Prime Minister's Media Adviser and the Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Abul Kalam Azad, Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, Samakal Editor Golam Sarwar, Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haq Milon, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutta, President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Ekushey Television Chief Executive Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and Channel I Head of News Shaikh Seraj.
The mayor highlighted different development activities taken in the city corporation area last two years and sought cooperation from all to continue the efforts.
"Many call Dhaka is an unsuitable city for dwelling. But it's not true. Dhaka is a deferent city. Once its position was very lower in terms of living standard but the situation has changed slightly," Annisul said.
The mayor said around 450 illegal houses, 2,767 temporary establishments have been evicted and 3,30,000 square feet road was retrieved while around 1.75 lakh illegal banners and festoons have been removed.
"Removing these banners and festoons was a matter of challenge... even, cases were lodged on charge of installing the banners and festoons," he said, adding that the city now witness lesser banners and festoons.
The mayor said Taka 25 crore was kept in the budgetary allocation for spearheading an anti-mosquito campaign.
Huq said the kitchen market will be moved from Karwanbazar. A library was set up at Rajabazar and another one will be built in Shah Ali area of Mirpur, he added.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury assured the mayor that the media will co-operate the city corporation authority to take ahead the development activities.
Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul underscored the need for putting emphasis on ensuring playgrounds, libraries and gymnasiums for mental growth of new generation side by side of infrastructural development.
Assuring of extending cooperation for development of Dhaka city, Matiur Rahman drew the mayor's attention for the development of Lalmatia area.
Shyamal Dutta urged the mayor to free the surrounding roads of main street occupied by trucks at the Satrasta area.
Annisul Huq took oath as Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor on May 6, 2015 while formally assumed office on May 14.
