The direct steamer service on Dhaka-Khulna-Dhaka route resumed today after five years, bringing an end to the ordeal of the passengers who were awaiting recommencement of the famous, safe and comfortable ferry service on this important route.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) resumed the direct service on Dhaka-Khulna-Dhaka route, with re-launching the journey of a steamer from this evening from Dhaka towards Khulna.
The famous and most popular steamer service of the state-owned BIWTC was discontinued on October 2, 2011 when Mongla-Ghasiakhali channel lost navigability.
BIWTC resumed the service as the navigability was restored in the channel on completion of necessary dredging at the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The steamer will leave Dhaka on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm and depart Khulna on Fridays at 6:30pm. Initially, the service will continue on trial, BIWTC said.
Public Relations Officer of BIWTC Nazrul Islam told BSS that the fare on the route will be the same as before suspension of the service.
Currently, BIWTC is running four rocket services on Dhaka-Morolganj route besides operating ferry services across the country and running some water services on different routes.
