Dhaka AL Council: Benzir named president, Poniruzzaman GS

Benzir Ahmed has been made president of Awami League’s Dhaka district unit while Poniruzzaman Torun was named general secretary.

 

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader announced their names during the triennial council of the party’s Dhaka district unit on Saturday.

 

Thousands of Awami League followers, activists and leaders of Dhaka and adjacent areas turned out at Dhaka’s Sher-E-Bangla Nagar old trade fair grounds to attend the council.

 

People started arriving at the venue from 12 pm. It was full to the brim within 2 pm.

 

The event saw a huge turnout while leaders and activists of Awami League were seen wearing colourful shirts.

 

Many said they were enjoying the festive atmosphere and arrangement.

 

Dhaka district consists of 5 upazilas: Savar, Dhamrai, Dohar, Nawabganj, and Keraniganj.

 

Bangladesh Awami League Presidium Member Advocate Kamrul Islam inaugurated the council while the general secretary of the party Obaidul Quader was present as the chief guest.

 

Leaders started the meeting by hoisting the party and national flags and releasing balloons and pigeons.

 

A troupe rendered the national anthem and AL’s party song.

 

Organisers informed that a total of 22,000 chairs were set up at the venue.

 

Traffic congestion was seen at one of the entry points of Dhaka-Gabtoli area due to the huge presence of leaders and activists.

 

Dhaka District Awami League triennial council was last held in September 2016. Freedom fighter Benazir Ahmed was appointed the president while a 71-member Dhaka District Awami League committee was formed with Mahbubur Rahman as the general secretary.
