A 34-year-old dentist was stabbed to death allegedly by muggers at Shewrapara in the city’s Mirpur area early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Ahmed Mahi Bulbul who worked in a clinic at Moghbazar. He was well known as ‘Gariber Doctor (The doctor of the poor)’ in his locality.

Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Model Police Station, said police recovered the body of Ahmed lying in a pool of blood under the Metrorail pillar no-278 on the road of Shewrapara around 6 am and sent it to Suhrawardi Medical College and Hospital morgue.

Primarily it is suspected that he was killed by muggers, said the OC.

However, police also recovered cash Tk 12,000 and a mobile phone set from his possession.

Police are investigating the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, a relative of the victim said Dr. Ahmed Mahi Bulbul was a kind man. Always smiling face Dr Bulbul got the title ‘the doctor of the poor’ providing free treatment. So he is not supposed to have such enemies. But besides medicine, he was in the contracting business for about 5 years, he said requesting anonymity.

Bulbul recently got a work order worth Tk 12 crore. He was supposed to go to Noakhali in the morning for that purpose. He was supposed to take Saurabh, a painter, with him.

Talking to reporters at Suhrawardi Medical College and Hospital morgue, Sourav said the decision to go to Noakhali was taken last night (Saturday). “Sir (Bulbul) called me around 4:00 am this morning (Sunday). After picking up the phone, he asked me to come to Farmgate after Fajr prayers.”

“When I came to Farmgate and called him, he told me that he had started for Farmgate. But after some time, I could not get Sir on the phone. I repeatedly rang him,but did not get any response. About an hour later, someone picked up the phone and said he is police,” Sourabh added.

“As I was asked to go to the hospital, I went there, I saw that Sir was dead,” he said.
