Denied treatment at two hospitals, Keraniganj FF dies in ambulance

A freedom fighter of Keraniganj’s Rohitpur area died in an ambulance on Wednesday as at least two hospitals allegedly refused to treat him.

The deceased was identified as Fazlur Rahman, 75, a freedom fighter and also information and research secretary of Awami League’s Dhaka district unit.

According to family sources, Fazlur complained of chest pain around 11 am. They immediately took him to the upazila health complex. But doctors on duty suggested taking him to Mitford Hospital.

When they managed to reach the Mitford hospital crossing heavy traffic of Old Dhaka, the hospital authorities advised them to take him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

With no other option in hand, they started for the DMCH and Fazlur passed away in the ambulance after reaching Nimtoli area, a spot in Old Dhaka very close to their destination.

Family members alleged that his life could have been saved if he was treated either at the upazila health complex or at the Mitford Hospital.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu and local Awami League leaders mourned the death and expressed deep shock and sorrow.

He was laid to eternal rest in Keraniganj this evening with state honour.
