DHAKA, Jan 2, 2017 (BSS)-President Abdul Hamid today said consensus among the political parties is indispensible to hold fair elections.
The President made the remarks during a discussion with a 16-member delegation of Jatiya Party (JP) led by its Chairman Anwar Hossain Manju over formation of a new Election Commission (EC) at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
The President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting.
During the 45-minute meeting, Abdul Hamid stressed the need for developing culture of mutual tolerance among the political parties to maintain democratic atmosphere.
The JP delegation proposed appointing election commissioners in phases to maintain continuity of the EC.
They said formation of a strong commission is not enough for holding a fair and acceptable election rather consensus among political parties is needed.
The party also proposed appointing polling officials from outside of the respective constituency during elections to make it free and neutral.
Secretaries concerned to the President were present.
President Abdul Hamid initiated the formal talks with political parties for the EC formation. He held first meeting with BNP on December 18 last year.
The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February.
