Concerted efforts to be taken to fight militancy: Italian minister

The visiting Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Bendetto Della Vedeva today called for taking concerted efforts to fight terrorism and militancy as those are the global crises.

"Since terrorism and militancy are global crises, all states across the world have to take united efforts to face the menaces," he told a bilateral meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam at State Guest House Meghna here.

Earlier, the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister arrived in the city this morning on one-day official visit, foreign minister ministry sources said.

During the meeting, the two junior ministers discussed wide range of bilateral issues with especial focus on expansion of bilateral trade, legal migration, women participation in politics and security aspects of foreign nationals in Bangladesh.

The Italian minister expressed satisfaction over the action taken by the government to arrest the killers of foreign nationals including nine Italians in an armed attack at Gulashan Holy Artisan Restaurant on July 1 and sending the bodies of the deceased quickly to their respective countries.

He also thanked the government to take effective steps to ensure safety and security of foreign nationals in the country.

Vedova also expressed satisfaction for selecting Italian Company "Leonardo" by Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority for providing flight operation and control equipment and services.

Mentioning Italy's long experience in leather goods and shoe industry, Shahriar Alam sought Italy's support for building Bangladesh's capacity in the sector.

Earlier, the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister visited the Holy Artisan Restaurant in the city's Gulshan area this morning and met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday afternoon.
