RAJSHAHI, Dec 31, 2016 (BSS)- Members of field administration and people of the Local Government Institutions (LGIs) should work together for making the Upazila Parishad (UZP) strengthened, effective and service-friendly.
They should come forward towards innovations so that the cherished goals are attained.People's participation in policy making, budget formulation, service delivery and development activities of local government bodies need to be ensured.
The observation came in a daylong workshop titled "Local Government Innovation and Good Practices" held at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium here today.
Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) of Local Government Division (LGD) organized the workshop in association with Commissioner Office of Rajshahi division discussing ways and means of how to transform the UZGPs into good governed entity.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Abdul Hannan addressed the workshop as the chief guest while Additional Commissioners Munir Hossain and Aminul Islam spoke as special guests with Shyam Kishore Roy, Director of Local Government Division in the chair.
During his keynote presentation, Rafiqul Islam, Divisional Facilitator of UZGP, gave an overview of his project's objectives and lessons learned issues.
Chief Guest Abdul Hannan says there is no alternative to make UZP effective and stronger local government institutions which will ultimately help democracy flourish in the country.
"The Upazilas have the potential of being the real hub for service delivery to the people. We are all pleased that the project strengthens both the elected representatives as well as the LGIs. We look forward to a transformation change at this vital level of democratic governance", said Abdul Hannan.
In addition to deputy directors of local government division, all chairmen and Upazila Nirbahi Officers from 67 UZPs in eight districts under the division joined the workshop.
On the occasion, eight UNOs were awarded for their nine innovations towards strengthening the UZPs.
