Committee for master plan to prevent river pollution

DHAKA, Dec 15, 2016 (BSS) - The government has formed a high-powered committee to prepare a master plan for preventing pollution and improving navigation around the Dhaka city rivers and Karnaphuli river in Chittagong,

Co-operatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain would lead the committee, while Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan and Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmood would be co-chairmen, according to a handout issued here today.

Other members of the committee are chief of naval staff, mayors of north city and south city corporations of Dhaka and city corporation of Chittagong, principal secretary or secretary to the prime minister's office, secretary of home, secretary of fisheries and livestock, secretary of housing and public works, secretary of LGRD division, secretary of environment and forest and secretary of shipping, commissioners of Dhaka and Chittagong, director general-3 to the prime minister's office, chairman of BIWTA, deputy commissioners of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chittagong, two representatives of civil society and director general (Administration) to the prime minister's office.

The director general (Administration) to the prime minister's office would act as secretary of the committee. The committee would have provision to co-opt members, the handout said.

The committee has been entrusted with the task preparing a master plan for preventing pollution and improving navigation of the Karnaphuli river and the rivers surrounding the Dhaka city.

It has to submit a draft plan within the next three months while a technical committee would be formed to prepare the master plan if necessary, it added.
