BSD seeks constitutional council for EC formation

DHAKA, Jan 4, 2017 (BSS) - Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal (BSD) has proposed formation of a constitutional council comprising Prime Minister, Speaker, Chief Justice, Opposition Leader and Attorney General for proposing names of election commissioners to the President for the constitution of a new Election Commission (EC).

BSD placed the proposals when its leaders met President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban this afternoon as part of his initiatives to constitute a new EC, President Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told reporters.

BSD general secretary Dilip Barua led a 12-member delegation in the discussion held at the Darbar Hall.

During the 55-minute meeting, BSD placed a nine-point proposal over the formation of a search committee and the new EC.

The proposals include enacting a law as per the constitution to form the Election Commission with people who are non-communal, progressive and skilled in administrative activities.

Expressing gratitude to the President for inviting them to the discussion, the delegation said it is an effective step to form a strong EC.

President Hamid said the opinion and proposals of the Samyabadi Dal will play a positive role in forming the EC.

The President initiated the formal talks with political parties for formation of EC on December 18 last year.

The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February.

Secretaries concerned to the President were present.
