DHAKA, April 4, 2017(BSS)-Awami League's publicity and publication secretary Dr Hasan Mahmood today condemned the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)'s statement regarding the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference as indicative of its "bankrupt and undemocratic" politics.
He added that the statement proved that they (BNP) want to kill democracy.
He further said that their statement was not only anti-government but also anti-national. "They are saying so to undermine the nation," he said.
The spokesperson of Awami League was speaking at a press conference at the Awami League president's political office at Dhanmandi. Other Awami League leaders were also present.
Dr Hasan said that the government had very efficiently organized the 136th conference of the 173-member IPU. The IPU comprises 46 thousand parliamentarians of the world.
He also said that 14 hundred legislators had joined the conference that includes speakers from 83 countries and deputy speakers from 45 countries. The secretary general of the United Nations had sent his message to the conference through his assistant secretary general.
This conference was of great pride to the nation and the guests had appreciated the efforts made by the host government.
He also said that Bengalis throughout the world was proud of the conference and it would be a milestone in the democratic journey of the nation.
Dr Hasan also said that as the current Bangladesh parliament was recognized internationally, that is why Saber Chowdhury was elected its chairperson and so was Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury elected chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
He said that it was expected that the BNP would oppose such a conference as it was a party born unnaturally -inside the cantonment - with fortune-seekers and opportunists.
