BNP depends on foreign power to go to power: Quader

Newly elected General Secretary of Awami League (AL) Obidul Quader today said BNP is a party of political bankruptcy which merely depends on foreign power instead of gaining popularity of common to go to state power.

Quader, also Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, said such a bankrupt party like BNP is rarely found in the world that depends on foreign blessings instead of the people of the country to assume state power.

Pointing to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakrul Islam's remarks on AL, Quader claimed that he was elected as AL GS through party council session whereas Fakrul was chosen by Khaleda Zia as secretary general only through her signature.

"Sheikh Hasina does not impose leadership, rather she nurtures leader from grassroots level and include them into the party through integrating young and veteran party men, which is a proof of her political sagacity," he said while addressing a mammoth reception in city's Laldigi Maidan this evening.

Chittagong city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) accorded the reception to the newly elected central AL leaders.

Addressing the reception as the chief guest, Quader said BNP as part of its strategy to cling to power waited prolonged for foreign supports, which also depressed them.

He said there might be differences of opinions inside the party but the party chief Sheikh Hasina will not tolerate disunity.

He urged the party-men to be united under the leadership of Bangabandhu daughter and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for country's development.

Listing out the development work of the present government, Quader said Chittagong will be turned into one city two towns with the construction of the tunnel under the river Karnaphuli.

"Bangladesh will be connected with Trans Asian Highway very soon with completion of the construction work of Dhaka-Chittagong elevated expressway," he said adding that the 39 percent construction work of Padma bridge has been completed with own financial assistance of the government.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, also presidium member of AL, urged the party men to be united under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

President of city AL and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury presided over the function while AL joint secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Dr Dipu Moni, members of advisory council, Mohammad Ishak Mia, Professor Dr Anupom Sen, Dr Pronob Barua, Organizing secretaries Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Enamul Hoque Shamim, Deputy Publicity and Publication secretary Aminul Islam Amin, deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, executive committee member Dipankar Talukdar, city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, state minister for land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed, AL leaders Muslem Uddin Ahmed and Nurul Alam Chowdhury, among others, addressed it.

Jointly conducted by M A Salam and Mofizur Rahman, the huge reception function was attended by former ministers, members of parliament, leaders of different front organizations of AL.
