Dhaka: Bangladesh and China today signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at forming a Joint Working Group and addressing e-commerce affairs to enhance bilateral trade, commerce, and investment. Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao represented their respective nations at the signing ceremony held at a hotel in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao arrived in Dhaka to discuss trade and investment opportunities. The visit is part of efforts to elevate the ‘Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership’ between the two countries. Wang is leading a delegation of over 100 Chinese companies exploring opportunities in Bangladesh.
During a meeting with the Chinese delegation, Sk. Bashir Uddin emphasized the potential benefits of Chinese drone technology in Bangladesh’s agriculture sector. He highlighted that employing drone technology for applying fertilizers, sowing seeds, and spraying pesticides could revolutionize agricultural practices in Bangladesh. He also noted the potential role of Chinese technology in enhancing trade and technological cooperation between the two nations.
Bashir also pointed out Bangladesh’s demographic advantages and relatively lower wages, seeking increased Chinese investment in sectors such as leather goods, light engineering, and food processing. In response, Wang Wentao expressed China’s readiness to support Bangladesh in agricultural and digital technology sectors, focusing on smart agricultural techniques and drone technology.
The Chinese Commerce Minister also acknowledged Bangladesh’s request for support in fisheries and marine resources, indicating China’s willingness to assist in these areas. Reflecting on 50 years of diplomatic ties, Wang highlighted the numerous projects China has implemented in Bangladesh, contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.
The meeting concluded with discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, commerce, investment, and technology, with both sides expressing optimism for deepened economic cooperation in the future.
