Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to mark the great leader’s historic return to independent Bangladesh from Pakistan jail.
On January 10, 1972 Bangabandhu returned home nearly one month after Bangladesh victory in the nine-month Liberation War against the Pakistani forces.
A discussion meeting was organized on the occasion at the Conference Hall of the High Commission.
Counsellor (Political) Md. Shafiul Alam conducted the meeting.
Messages from President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were read out by Minister (Press) Shaban Mahmood and Assistance Defence Adviser (Air) Md. Khairul Mamun, psc respectively.
The High Commissioner in his speech recalled the help and assistance India, under the leadership of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had extended to the 1971 War of Liberation in which three million people laid down their lives.
Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day today
He said Bangabandhu, in his historic address to a cheering crowd during a stopover in New Delhi on way to Dhaka, laid the foundation of the “unique relation” Bangladesh and India enjoy today.
He also said Bangabandhu was the unparalleled leader in the history of Bangladesh.
Marking Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day, a one minute silence was observed.
A special munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for the departed soul of Bangabandhu, his family and the liberation war martyrs and continued peace and prosperity of the nation.
