RANGPUR, March 17, 2017 (BSS) - The common people from all walks of life celebrated the 98th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children Day-2017 here today in a befitting manner.
The district administration, Awami League (AL), its associate bodies, City Corporation, Muktijoddha Sangshad, Shishu Academy, Shilpokola Academy, Islamic Foundation, Bangabandhu Shishu Kishore Mela, educational institutions, sociocultural, professional and other organisations celebrated the day through various programmes.
The District Information Office, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Health and Family Planning Department, CARE Bangladesh, Merry Stopes Clinic, District Corruption Prevention Committee, NGOs and other organisations also celebrated the day.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, cake cutting, children's gatherings and rallies, processions of unprivileged children, drawing, handwriting, essay and ready speech competitions, screening of documentary films on Bangabandhu, discussions and cultural functions.
The local news papers published special supplementary issues, special doa, prayers and munajats were offered at the religious institutions and improved diets served among the unprivileged children.
The celebrations began through placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Bangabandhu Square in the city and releasing balloons there in the morning.
Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General of Police Khondker Golam Faruk, Zila parisahd Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, it's General Secretary (GS) Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju, city AL President Shafiar Rahman Shafi and its GS Tushar Kanti Mandal placed wreaths at the Bangabandhu's Mural.
Later, leaders of AL, its associate organisations, officials of government departments, NGOs, sociocultural and political organisations, professional and business bodies, heads of educational institutions and community leaders placed wreaths.
The district administration brought out the main rally and organised main discussion meeting on Bangabandhu at Town Hall auditorium in the city with Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman in the chair.
Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed addressed the discussion as the chief guest.
In their speeches, the speakers recalled the glorious memories of Bangabandhu, discussed his unparallel contribution to the nation and sacrifice, life and character of standing for justice, struggles against repression for independence and unending love for the people.
Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed called upon the people to remain united against the defeated anti-liberation forces who tried to destroy the country's independence by killing Bangabandhu with his family members in 1975, as conspiracies were still being hatched.
The chief guest asked the people to work with patriotic zeal in building a middle income nation by 2021 and developed Bangladesh by 2041 to make independence meaningful for every citizen as dreamt by Bangabandhu.
