KISHOREGANJ, Mar 15, 2017 (BSS) - The rugged Astagram today witnessed the first movement of a four-wheel automobile, a jeep, with the head of state being its passenger while his son was on the driving seat.
"President Abdul Hamid visited remote parts of the rugged upazilia on a jeep while his son Awami League lawmaker Rejwan Ahammad Taufiq drove it for nearly one and half hours through different areas of Itna and Mithamoin," President's press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.
The Bangabhaban spokesman said the usual presidential convoy did not mark the presidential ride by escorting the vehicle as the jeep was the first vehicle brought to the area under a special arrangement recently for the use of a local hospital.
"He travelled the remote areas in the neighbourhood from 1 pm to 2.30 pm when villagers greeted him with massive applause as the son of the soil . . . he talked to them and enquired about their welfare," Abedin said.
Officials said the jeep was brought to Astagram recently for the use of a local hospital but lack of adequate road infrastructures made its movement difficult in the difficult "haor" terrains.
They, however, said a three-kilometre road was constructed in recent time where it could move without much hassle.
Abedin said the president later asked the officials concerned to complete the different construction of the communication infrastructures within deadlines maintaining procedural standards.
The president's jeep ride came ahead of his return to the capital wrapping up a three-day visit to his birthplace in the northern district.
