DHAKA, June 2, 2017 (BSS) - Anti-tobacco campaigners today welcomed price hike on cigarette in the proposed budget for 2017-2018 fiscal (FY).
Placing the budget in the Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said, "I am proposing to fix the price of the low segment for every 10 sticks of local brand cigarette at Taka 27 from existing Taka 23 and increase the Supplementary Duty rate to 52 percent from existing 50 percent."
"At the same time, I am proposing to introduce and fix the price of the low segment for every 10 sticks of international brand cigarette at Taka 35 and the Supplementary Duty rate at 55 percent," he added.
"However, I am proposing to fix the tax inclusive price of 25 sticks of non-filter bidi at Taka 15 and 20 sticks of filter bidi at Taka 15. These rates will be effective from 1 June 2017," the finance minister added.
The anti-tobacco campaigners also demanded to increase price hike on smokeless tobacco as a significant number of people are consuming different smokeless tobacco products, which have caused serious diseases including, cancer.
