Veteran Awami League (AL) leader and
freedom fighter SM Yusuf died of respiratory disease today while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital. He was 70.
"SM Yusuf breathed his last at a private hospital around 2 am last night", Patiya Muktijuddah Commander Mohiuddin Ahmed told BSS.
Yusuf, a former education and cultural affairs secretary of Awami League Central Working Committee, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Family sources said Yusuf, a former commander of Bangladesh Liberation Forces (BLF), (Mujib Bahani) in Chittagong, went to Australia several times to have treatment of his respiratory diseases and to visit his son's residence there.
He returned from Australia on November 6 last. He was admitted to the hospital here on Monday as his condition further deteriorated.
He will be buried at his village home at Monsha village under Patiya upazila on Friday.
President and General Secretary of Chittagong south district AL Muslem Uddin Ahmed and Mofizur Rahman respectively and Commander of Patiya Muktijuddah Command Mohiuddin Ahmed, in separate messages of condolence, expressed deep shock at the death of the AL leader.
