AL lawmaker Liton shot dead

GAIBANDHA, Dec 31, 2106 (BSS) - Ruling Awami League Lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 constituency Manzurul Islam Liton was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at his village home in the district this evening, officials and police said.

They said doctors declared Liton dead minutes after he was rushed at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with bullet wounds from his home at Sundarganj upazila.

"He (Liton) was brought here (RMCH) with wounds but he possibly died somewhere on his way to the hospital," RMCH's acting director Dr Ajay Kumar Roy told BSS.

Witnesses said the lawmaker was brought to the facility at around 7.15 from his village home while the doctors declared him dead 15 minutes later examining his condition.

Police earlier said unidentified miscreants shot Liton from a close proximity at his village home at Masterpara near Bamondanga railway station as they appeared at the scene mounting on a motorbike.

"Three assailants arrived at the yard of Liton's house where he was holding a meeting with some people . . . one of them fired two shots from a pistol at about 5:45 pm," Gaibandha's additional police super Abdullah Al-Faruk told BSS.

He said the miscreants, however, fled the scene using the motorbike.

Soon after the incident people at the neighbourhood particularly the Awami League activists staged protests blocking the railway line at Bamondanga station.
