Agriculture assistance of Taka 40,300 cr distributed in last eight years, PM

DHAKA, April 18, 2017 (BSS) - Agriculture Assistance worth of Taka 40,300 crores were distributed among the farmers in the last eight years for the development of the agriculture sector, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Prime Minister said this while giving a message on the eve of 45th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Krishak League to be observed tomorrow (April 19).

Describing to the initiatives which have been taken by the government for development of the agriculture sector for the last eight years since 2009 as 'epoch-making', Sheikh Hasina said in her message that along with providing huge amount of agriculture assistance, the government has distributed agriculture input cards among 2,05,75397 farmers for the first time across the country.

"We have given fertilizer, seed and mechanical equipments to the farmers under subsidized price ...power supply has been ensured during the irrigation season and agriculture credit is being disbursed with easier condition and less interest," said the PM.

Even bank account has been opened for the farmers with an amount of Taka 10, the premier added in her message.

Terming the Awami League as the farm and farmers friendly government, the Awami League President and Prime Minister said that "we had made the country self-sufficient during the period between 1996 and 2001, but later the government led by BNP-Jamaat alliance turned the country again a food-deficit one."

The PM recalled the slain 18 farmers and their families who were killed for staging protest against the mismanagement and corruption in distribution of agriculture inputs including fertilizer by the then BNP government in 1995. The country now has achieved self-sufficiency in food production now reached to nearly 4 crore tonnnes, she added.

Father of the Nation had founded the Bangladesh Krishak League on April 19 in 1972.
