9 held for extortion impersonating police, journalists

DHAKA, May 31, 2017 (BSS) - Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested nine members of an organized inter-district fraudulent gang which extorted money from the people impersonating police and journalists, from the city's Demra area today.

A squad of DB arrested them along with a walky-talky set and two pairs of handcuff from a flat on the third floor of a house "Ayesha Manjil" on Shahjalal Road, Konapara under Demra Police Station, said a DB official.

The arrestees are: Abdul Halim, Md Rony, Mobarak Hossain, Rozina, Selim alias Ghatok, Md Monju, Md Rafiq, and Hannan Matabbar.

During the preliminary interrogation, the arrestees confessed their link to extort money from the people impersonating themselves as police and journalists. They called-in people in their so-called marriage media and confined them for ransom. DB personnel also rescued such two victims Abdul Aziz and Arman from their possession.

The criminals also forced women into prostitution after alluring them with giving jobs at garments factories alongside with cheating people in the name of sending them abroad, the official said.

Legal action was taken against the arrestees to this end.
