DHAKA, April 1, 2017 (BSS) - The 73rd birth anniversary of veteran freedom fighter, former president of Dhaka City Awami League and first-ever elected mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mohammad Hanif was observed through various programmes today.
On this day in 1944, Mohammad Hanif was born in a prominent Muslim family of Dhaka. He was a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had active role in all democratic movement including 1969's Mass Upsurge and 1971 Liberation War.
Hanif's only son and incumbent Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon passed the day with the destitute people and family inmates including his wife Farhana Sayeed, mother Fatema Hanif, sisters Sahana Hanif and Rehana Hanif with cutting a cake at noon, said an official press release.
A special doa was held for peace of the departed soul of Hanif. Sayeed Khokon later offered the poor people with foods.
On the occasion, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation, Mayor Hanif Smriti Sangsad and different social and cultural organizations arranged Doa and Milad Mahfil and offered prayer at the grave of Hanif, said a press release.
Hanif, who suffered critical splinter injuries in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack, died on November 28 in 2006 at the age of 62.
