5,408 homeless to get houses as PM’s gifts in Rangpur

A total of 5,408 landless and homeless families of the ‘Ka’ category will get new houses as gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the fourth phase of Asrayan-2 project in Rangpur tomorrow.

“Each of the selected 5,408 families will get a new house built at a cost of Taka 2,84,500 in the division tomorrow,” Additional Commissioner (Revenue) of Rangpur Division Md. Ibrahim Khan told BSS today.

The 5,408 newly constructed abodes, out of a total of 9,029 allocated houses in the fourth phase, will be handed over to the selected families tomorrow and the rest of 3,621 houses are under construction that will also be distributed soon.

Besides, the remaining 345 more newly built houses under the third phase of the Asrayan-2 project will also be distributed to the beneficiaries tomorrow.

As a result, a total of 5,753 houses, including 5,408 under the fourth phase and 345 under the third phase of the Asrayan-2 project, will be distributed to 5,753 homeless and landless families tomorrow.

“The Prime Minister is expected to launch the handing over the ownership of the new houses through distributing keys and land registration documents to homeless families through a videoconferencing from Ganabhaban tomorrow,” Khan said.

The government has allocated over Taka 256.87 crore for the construction of 9,029 houses in all eight districts of Rangpur division in the fourth phase of Asrayan-2 project.

Earlier, the government allocated Taka 368.97 crore for the construction of 15,956 houses in the third phase, Taka 224.18 crore for 13,130 houses in the first phase and Taka 239.69 crore for construction of 12,436 houses in the second phase in Rangpur division.

“So far, a total of 41,177 houses, including 13,130 under first phase, 12,436 under second phase and 15,611 under third phase of Asrayan-2 project were distributed to 41,177 homeless and landless families of the division,” Khan said.

Meanwhile, the selected homeless families in the fourth phase are eagerly waiting to get colorful houses with corrugated iron sheets on roofs, two bedrooms, one kitchen, one hygienic sanitary latrine, one utility space and veranda tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Dr. Chitralekha Nazneen said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will distribute 758 houses, out of a total of 1,338 houses allocated under the fourth phase, to the landless and homeless families tomorrow in the district.

Besides, the other houses allocated under the fourth phase will be distributed later in the district after completion of the ongoing construction works.

Earlier, 4,321 new houses, including 1,273 under the first phase, 991 under the second phase and 991 new houses under third phase of Asrayan-2 project were distributed to the homeless and landless families of all eight upazilas in Rangpur.

Asrayan Project, one of the Prime Minister’s 10 special initiatives, aims at ensuring shelter for all homeless people to assist them rebuild life, improve living standard, health care and skill development on income generating activities.

The government began distributing the brick-built tin-shed semi-pucca houses among homeless families marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Mujib Year to ensure shelters of all citizens.

“Different government departments are providing training and assistance to the rehabilitated families to make them self-reliant through income-generating activities on the way to build a smart and developed Bangladesh leaving no one behind,” Dr. Nazneen added.
