Amid the soaring price hike of edible oil in Bangladesh, a guest at a wedding reception in Barishal felt a 5-litre can of soybean oil would be the perfect gift for a young couple starting married life.

German citizen Alisa got married to Subho, son of a local Awami League leader, in Germany recently. Their reception was held Friday.

Around 3000 guests were invited to the wedding reception hosted by the groom’s family, locally known as “Bou Bhat’, at Ulal batna area in Charbaria union of Sadar upazila on Friday.

Parvez Russel, the guest who gave the gift said, “Currently oil price hike, oil crisis are the most talked about topics in the country. I decided to give this gift to add more joy to the already much discussed wedding program of a foreign girl with a Bangladeshi boy.”

Father of the groom Shahidul Alam, Awami League president of Charbaria union said, “Meals were cooked in 65 big pans and the program ended perfectly. Our German daughter-in-law and her friend Jenifa were very happy seeing the grand arrangements.”

Subho, hailing from Barisal, fell in love with Alisa in Germany and then they got married there but it was devoid of all the grandeur of the Bengali wedding rituals.

Recently they came to Bangladesh with their 6-month old daughter and a friend of Alisa. After their arrival at Barishal home of Subho the family decided to arrange all the wedding programs for them.

On Tuesday, all the family members attended the bridal shower or ‘Gaye Holud’ program. Friday’s reception was arranged in traditional Bengali style.
