2 women detained with 40 gold bars at HSIA

DHAKA- Customs intelligence this morning detained two female passengers and recovered 40 gold bars weighing 4.665 kilograms from their possession at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).

The two detainees are Jesmin Akter, 35, and Pervin Akter, 26, both from Patenga area of Chittagong.

"Both the detainees arrived in Dhaka via Chittagong from Muscat, Oman. Acting on tip off, customs officials challenged them and they were made to bring out the gold bars hidden inside their undergarments. Each bar weighs 10 tola and the estimated worth of the total gold is Taka 2.40 crore," said Customs Intelligence Assistant Revenue Officer Enamul Haque.

Customs Intelligence Director General Dr Moinul Khan told BSS that the duo confessed their involvement in the smuggling.

"Jesmin is a garment worker, while Pervin works in a beauty parlor. They were bringing the gold to Dhaka as one Jalal had promised them giving one bar each if they could manage to handover the gold successfully in the capital," Khan said.

A case was filed in this connection with Airport Police Station.
