Three arrested in joint drive against counterfeit medicines

Three traders have been arrested in a joint drive against fake medicines by police and drug administration in the city’s Mitford area, the hub of the medicines trade,

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) Lalbagh Division and the Department of Drugs conducted the joint drive on Saturday.

A large quantity of counterfeit medicines and creams of banned domestic and foreign brands were recovered during the drive.

The arrestees were identified as Faisal Ahmed, Sumon Chandra Mallick and Md. Liton Gazi.

The seized products included 100 pieces i-pill, 160 pieces Super Gold Kosturi, 3000 pieces NAPROXEN PLUS-500+20mg, 350 pieces BETNOVATE-C, 20mg, 1000 pieces Protobit-20mg, 115 boxes ENO, 400 pieces SANAGRA-100, 1500 pieces Periactin, cream ১১০pieces MOOV, 30 pieces Ring Guard, 500 container Whitfield, 250 pieces NIX Rubbing Balm, 300 pieces Vix Cold Plus, 20 packet vapor and gacojima 420 container.

Briefing reporters at the DMP media centre on Sunday, Joint Commissioner (DB-South) Md Mahbub Alam said the drive came on information that some unscrupulous traders are selling counterfeit medicines and creams of banned domestic and foreign brands in the Mitford wholesale medicine market.

Raids were conducted on Medicine World and Aloknath Drug House on the ground floor of Sureshwari Medicine Plaza in Mitford and Rafsan Pharmacy on the ground floor of Haji Rani Medicine Market.

He said that the counterfeit drug syndicate has been using the Mitford drug market as a camouflage to supply tainted drugs across the country.

The arrestees are suspected to have been playing a key role in distributing the counterfeit drugs across the country as wholesalers in Mitford market.

He added that the suspects have been collecting medicines and creams from their associates and marketing them in the Mitford area in the hope of making more profit.

A case was filed at Kotwali Police Station under Special Power Act against the arrested people.
