Two youths from Gobindaganj of Gaibandha have died following consumption of spurious alcohol, while five of the same party are fighting for their lives in critical condition in hospital.
Of the deceased, Toufiquzazaman Saikat died on Thursday night itself, and Mehedi Hasan Sohag, 32, followed barely 12 hours later, around 11am on Friday.
According to locals- Saikat and Sohag consumed the dodgy liquor with their friends Rana, Bappi, Badhon Sarker, and others who all fell sick together within hours.
Toufiquzzaman died after being rushed to a local medical facility.
The others are receiving treatment at Ziaur Rahman Medical College in Bogura, and Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.
Dr. Shariful Islam, a doctor at Gobindaganj Health Center, said some youths were admitted after drinking spurious liquor on Thursday night and later were referred to the Bagura and Rangpur hospitals as their condition deteriorated.
Officer-In Charge of Gobindaganj Police Station confirmed the deaths to UNB.
He refused however, to draw any conclusions on the cause of death before any investigation – despite a doctor saying so.
