The traditional outfit of Bangladesh’s largest ethnic minority group, the Chakma, is known as ‘Pinon Hadi’.

The upper part of the outfit is called Hadi, a piece of fabric worn diagonally across the body over the shoulder.

The lower part is Pinon, a sort of long and straight wrap-around skirt.

Chakma women make this traditional cloth by weaving through ‘Loom’ which is called ‘Bain’.

At present, many Chakma women make this outfit commercially. They sell one dress for Tk 1500-6000.

These photographs of weaving this traditional outfit were taken while visiting Bilaichhari area of Kaptai in Rangamati. The Chakma live mainly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, especially in Rangamati and Khagrachari districts

There are 45 ethnic groups living in Bangladesh. Each ethnic group has its own language, history, culture and heritage.
