Man to die for killing woman after rape in Ctg

A tribunal here on Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing a woman after gang raped at Kumira in Sitakunda upazila in 2017.

The tribunal also fined condemned convict Jasim Uddin Bappi, 50, son of late Idris Mia of the same area, Tk 1 lakh.

According to the prosecution, Sharmin Akter went to a hill in Kumira area to collect wood on March 29, 2017 where she was gang raped and then hacked to death.

Police recovered the body of Sharmin Akter from the area on March 30, 2017.

Later, victim’s daughter Yasmin filed a case against unidentified people with Sitakunda Police Station on the same day.

Police arrested five people in this connection and submitted charge-sheet against them.

After examining the records and witnesses, Chattogram Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jamiul Haider handed down the verdict while acquitted Aiyub Khan and Sharif Ahmed as allegations brought against them could not be proved.

However, two others accused- Sorowar Alam Seru, 55, and Abdul Motaleb Liton- died in jail.
