Lockdown: Police arrest 550 for violations on Dhaka streets

Police arrested 550 people from capital Dhaka for violating lockdown restrictions on Thursday.

The arrestees were sued under the DMP Ordinance with different police stations of the capital, confirmed Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Iftekhairul Islam.

Of them, 95 were arrested in Roma, 60 in Lalbagh, 85 in Motijheel, 117 in Wari, 100 in Tejgaon, 87 in Gulshan and 6 in Uttara.

Meanwhile, 274 vehicles were sued and fined Tk463,050 during this time.

Also, mobile courts sentenced eight people and fined many individuals and business institutions on the first day of “stringent lockdown.”

Previously, the law enforcers detained 373 people and arrested 76 from different areas of the capital till 5pm today, said police sources.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh entered a stringent lockdown, with patrol teams in the streets to convince people to stay home.

Army personnel were seen patrolling the city streets in aid of the civil administration.

Police set up barricades and check-posts at all important points of the city to monitor the movement of vehicles and people.

So, most roads in the capital were found almost empty with fewer private vehicles moving.
