Int’l seminar on language in London on Monday

An international seminar on Language as a Launchpad of Liberation: Emergence of Bangladesh’ will be held in London on Monday, marking the 70th anniversary of the martyrdom of students at Dhaka University.

The seminar will be arranged at the Studio, Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London at 2pm.

Noted economist Prof Rehman Sobhan, Indian ambassador Chandrashekhar Dasgupta who is author of a recent book ‘India and Bangladesh Liberation War, BBC journalist Mark Tully who covered the 1971 War, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner in the UK Saida Muna Tasneem and Pakistani Academic Dr Ayesha Siddiqa will join seminar as the panel speakers.

Every year, 21 February is commemorated as Language Martyrs’ Day in Bangladesh as well as the United Nations’ International Mother Language Day.

On this date in 1952, police shot and killed several students at Dhaka University during a demonstration demand that Bengali is recognised as a state language of then-Pakistan.
