Mass Effect: Andromeda
It will not be overwhelming to say that the launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda was nothing short of catastrophic. When the game got released, it was riddled with problems and malfunctions, which infuriated the franchise’s many hard-core fans. The storyline of the game was also criticized, with many players claiming they had no connection to any of the characters.
While the bugs were intolerable, it’s fair to argue that a large portion of the game was unjustly condemned as a result of the unreasonable expectations put on it. Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
Pandemic Studios created Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, which is a thrilling action game featuring an abundance of weapons and vehicles to wield, similar to the Just Cause series.
Interestingly, the action game’s storyline was an unexpected cause of political controversy in 2008. The interface of this game depicts Venezuela, a fictitious war-torn nation, and players are tasked with assassinating the country’s president. Unsurprisingly, this did not make an impact on the local populace, with charges of propaganda leveled at the game.
The Saboteur
As with The Mercenaries 2, the game manufacturing company Pandemic Studios produced and released The Saboteur in 2009. The Saboteur was set during World War II in Nazi-occupied Paris.
The game has an intriguing graphic style that ties into the gameplay. For instance, the regions heavily held by Nazi troops are shown in black and white. However, just a few elements of this game have been displayed in color, such as specific symbols, blood, etc.
The Division 2
Tom Clancy has again made a list. Division 2 is a virtual action role-playing game set in Washington, DC, that has teams of up to four players. Ubisoft announced shortly after the release of the game that it had fallen short of sales estimates. However, with positive player feedback and word of mouth, The Division 2 has now exceeded 10 million sales.
Along with its strong sales performance, Division 2 received favorable reviews from reviewers, garnering an 84 on Metacritic and a respectable nomination for Best Action-Adventure game at The Game Awards 2018.
Watch Dogs 2
Anyone can forget how much anticipation there was for the first Watch Dogs before the game’s 2014 release. As with the Mass Effect: Andromeda, the game was widely panned upon release for falling short of expectations, but fans are gradually starting to appreciate it for what it was.
Watch Dogs 2 was published a little over two years after its predecessor and tried to address several of the game’s flaws, including the boring open environment. Watch Dogs 2, like the previous two chapters in the trilogy, seems like it might have been so much more; yet, it remains a great open-world experience.
Mad Max
Once upon a time, the entire gaming industry was inundated by movie tie-in games. From Prince of Persia, Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings to almost every children’s film, game producers often sought to capitalize on the popularity of famous films by developing a 6- to 8-hour adventure.
However, such games have declined in popularity in recent years. The tight timelines that developers had to stick to while developing tie-in games resulted in poor results.
Despite gamers’ growing mistrust of such tie-in games, there are certain films and franchises that beg for the gaming treatment, like the Mad Max series. Mad Max was released only months after Mad Max: Fury Road, but it is not a direct sequel. This is likely why Mad Max was a hit since the creators were not constrained by the limitations of a 90 to 160-minute film, as most tie-in games are.
Just Cause 4
Just Cause 4 will appeal to gamers who want enjoyable games, regardless of how absurd or outlandish they may be. Although the game received some criticism and its face animations haven’t aged well, LA Noire remains an excellent choice for gamers thrilled by the idea of stepping into the shoes of a 1940s investigator.
Numerous flaws in LA Noire were addressed in the game’s latest remastering, including the replacement of the confusing choices “Truth,” “Lie,” and “Doubt,” with “Good Cop,” “Accuse,” and “Bad Cop.”
Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas were all great candidates, but the most current GTA release takes the cake.
