Bangladesh drawn with minnows in qualification round

Forced to play an extra qualification round to get into the main draw for October’s T20 World Cup, Bangladesh can be quite pleased at the flip of the dice just now, that has presented Scotland, Papua New Guinea, and Oman as their Group B opponents. ICC confirmed on Friday.

The detailed schedule is yet to be finalized. This World Cup will be played across three different venues in the UAE and Oman. Bangladesh are likely to play in Oman in the first round.

A total of eight teams— Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands and Namibia in Group A while Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Oman are in Group B— will participate in the first round.

The top two teams of each group will qualify to the Super 12s stage. The champions of Group A and runners up of Group B will join England, Australia, South Africa and West Indies in Group 1 of Super 12s, while champions of Group B and runners up of Group A will join India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Afghanistan in Group 2 of Super 12s.

The top eight teams of the T20Is ranking qualified directly to the Super 12s.

The groupings:

Round 1: Group A: Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands and Namibia

Group B: Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Oman

Super 12s: Group 1: England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, A1 and B2.

Group 2: India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan, A2 and B1.
