A tight cricketing calendar has prompted the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to consider a five-team Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) this year, hinted Nazmul Hasan.
The BCB president said they might go for a five-team BPL this year so that the players get some time to rest in between international series which are coming up.
According to the current proposed schedule, the next season of BPL is likely to start in the third week of January after the Bangladesh team returns from their ongoing New Zealand tour, and BPL teams have some practice time.
Bangladesh national team is going through a tight schedule and strict bio-secure bubbles. They started quarantine right before the T20 World Cup, after that, they also maintained a bio-bubble during the Pakistan series at home. Now they are maintaining another bubble in New Zealand which is putting their mental health in a worrying stage.
“We might not be able to continue with the current plan of BPL,” Nazmul told the media on Saturday. “BPL is so important for us as a T20 World Cup is coming up. But we are not sure we will get to host the next season of this event.”
Along with a plan of five-team BPL, the BCB is also thinking to decrease the venues to two instead of the earlier plan of three venues.
According to the BCB president, if this year’s BPL is an event of five teams and two venues, the teams and players will get some rest in between matches, which is important for the well-being of the players and the other parties involved in the event.
However murmurs continue to swirl that some of the existing or past franchisees are unwilling to take BCB’s offer of single-year franchise for BPL 2021 (although likely to be played, if at all, in 2022). They would rather take franchises for longer periods, and let it be known to BCB that single-year franchises are not worth the invesztrment to them.
