2 arrested at Dhaka airport with Tk 1.4 crore worth foreign currency

Armed Police arrested two departing passengers at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday morning while allegedly trying to smuggle out Saudi Riyal.

They tried to go to Bahrain with Saudi Riyal equivalent to Tk 1.4 crore Bangladeshi currency, confirmed additional superintendent of Airport Armed Police Mohammad Ziaul Haque.

The arrestees are Jewel, 38, of Brahmanbaria and Golam Rabbani, 48, of Cumilla.

It was learnt that the two were trying to reach Bahrain on a Gulf Air flight at 5.40am this morning. From there they would go to Dubai. Armed Police arrested them from the holding lounge of the airport. At that time, 6 lakh Saudi Riyals were recovered from their luggage which is equivalent to almost Tk 1.40.

Ziaul Haque said they kept watch on the two men on intelligence information. During primary interrogation after the arrest, they admitted that they were trying to smuggle the Riyals to Dubai.

The two men travel to Dubai every week, added the Ziaul.
