New Maldives envoy presents credentials to president

High Commissioner (HC) of Maldives to Bangladesh Shiruzimath Sameer on Tuesday presented her credentials to President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban in the evening.

President’s Press Secretary Mohammad Joynal Abedin briefed the reporters after the meeting.

Welcoming the high commissioner, the President said Bangladesh as one of the friendly countries, has been maintaining excellent bilateral relations with the Republic of Maldives since its very beginning.

He also said that the bilateral ties have expanded over the years in various fields, including trade and investment.

Bangladesh now has many high quality institutions, including medical, technical and technological, in the field of higher education, President Hamid urged the new HC to take necessary steps on using these opportunities .

Mentioning the production of various international quality products, including readymade garments, medicines, ceramics, jute and jute-made goods, leather and leather-made products, plastic goods, Hamid said “The Maldives can import these products from Bangladesh, which will help maintain the trade balance between the two countries as well as increase bilateral trade ties in the future.”

He also put emphasis on the mutual visits of the representatives belonging to the public and private sectors between the two countries.

He said Bangladesh and the Maldives are high vulnerable countries on the climate change impact issue at present and stressed the need for a joint-effort to address this issue in different regional and international forums.

The newly appointed High Commissioner of Maldives expressed her gratitude to the Government and people of Bangladesh for providing various assistance including sending medical teams to the Maldives.

During the meeting, Abdul Hamid assured the high commissioner to provide all necessary cooperation as she (HC) sought all-out cooperation of the President during his assuagement in Bangladesh.

President’s Office Secretary Sampad Barua, Military Secretary Major General SM Shamim-Uz-Zaman, Press Secretary Mohammad Joynal Abedin and Secretary (attachment) Md Wahidul Islam Khan were also present on the occasion.

Earlier, on their arrival at Bangabhaban, a smartly turned-out contingent of the horse-mounted President Guard Regiment (PGR) gave the commissioner guards of honour.
