Kabir’s death in road crash: Garbage truck driver held in Chandpur

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members have detained a driver of a Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) garbage truck from Chandpur district in connection with the death of Ahsan Kabir Khan in the city’s Panthapath area on Thursday.

The detainee was identified as Mohammad Hanif alias Fatik, 23, son of Kamal Mia of Cumilla district.

Tipped off, a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive in the area and detained Hanif from Haimchar upazila of the district on Friday night, according to a Rab press release.

Ahsan Kabir, 46, a reporter of ‘Daily Shangbad’ was going to his workplace in Mirpur from Moghbazar by a ride-sharing motorbike.

When the bike reached Panthapath area around 2:30 pm he fell down from the bike after being hit by a garbage truck of DNCC.

He was also run over by the truck as the driver kept driving the vehicle ignoring the accident.

The truck driver and its helper managed to flee the scene leaving behind the vehicle at Green Road.

Later, Ahsan was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Victim’s wife Nadira Parveen lodged a complaint with Kalabaghan police.

While briefing reports on Saturday, Director (Legal and Media Wing) of the Rab headquarters Commander Khandaker Al Moin said Hanif used to work as a mechanic at a shop.

He used to drive different vehicles of Dhaka North City Corporation illegally and he has been working as a driver of DNCC dump trucks for the last one year, said Rab director.

Though he did not get any salary for the city corporation office but he used to earn money after selling the oil allotted for the dump truck, he said.

Besides, he had no license for driving heavy vehicles, said Rab.

“Process are underway to take legal action against Hanif,” he said.

Earlier, on November 24, Naim Hasan, a 17-year-student of Notre Dame College, was killed when a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) hit him at Golchattar in the city’s Gulistan area while crossing the road.

Students staged demonstration for several days after putting up barricade on different parts of the city.
