The match-winning hero of Bangladesh’s historic victory against New Zealand in the first Test earlier this month, Ebadot Hossain has been nominated for the January 2022 ICC Player of the Month award. He will compete for the coveted award against South Africans Dewald Brevis and Keegan Petersen. The winner of the January edition will be announced later this month. Let’s take a look at how each of the nominated players performed last month.
ICC Player of the Month for January 2022: Nominated Players
Ebadot Hossain, Dewald Brevis, and Keegan Petersen have been nominated for the ICC Men’s Best Player Award for January 2022. They all did well for their respective countries last month. Let’s take a deeper look at their performance in January.
Ebadot Hossain (Bangladesh)
Performance in January, 2022: M: 2 | Wkts: 9 | BBI: 6/46 | Econ: 3.82 | Ave: 29.33 | 5W: 1
Ebadot Hossain rose to the occasion in the second innings of Bangladesh’s first Test against New Zealand in January. His superb bowling performance helped Bangladesh bowl New Zealand out for only 169 runs in the second innings. As a result, Bangladesh barely required 40 runs to secure a historic victory. Bangladesh won the match by eight wickets, and Ebadot Hossain was named player of the match. Ebadot took a total of 7 wickets in the match, including a 6-wicket haul in the second innings. He has deservedly earned a spot in the January 2022 ICC Player of the Month.
Dewald Brevis (South Africa)
Performance in ICC U19 World Cup 2022: M: 6 | Runs: 506 | HS: 138 | Ave: 84.33 | SR: 90.19 | 100s: 02
Dewald Brevis, popularly known as Baby AB, was one of the best players in the ICC U19 World Cup 2022, which recently ended. Brevis scored the most runs in the tournament with 506, including two centuries against Bangladesh and Uganda. South Africa finished seventh in the championship, but Dewald Brevis was awarded player of the tournament for his remarkable performance with the bat. This right-handed batter has a bright future ahead of him, and he has rightly been nominated for the January ICC Player of the Month award.
Keegan Petersen (South Africa)
Performance in January, 2022: M: 2 | Runs: 244 | HS: 82 | Ave: 61.00 | SR: 55.32 | 50s: 3
Keegan Petersen was a vital player in South Africa’s 2-1 victory against India in the Test series. Petersen had two important knocks in the series-deciding match in Cape Town. He guided South Africa to victory with a superb 82-run knock in the second innings while chasing 212. Keegan also played a patient 72-run knock in the first innings. This right-hand batter was named Player of the Series after scoring the highest 276 runs in the 3-match bilateral series. Keegan Petersen is a strong contender for the January 2022 ICC Player of the Month award.
After reviewing the individual performances of the nominated players for their respective nations in January 2022, it is apparent that none of the contenders is a clear winner. Each player who has been nominated does have a strong case for being awarded the best cricketer of the previous month. Ebadot Hossain was outstanding in Bangladesh’s one of the greatest cricket victories against New Zealand. Dewald Brevis had a fantastic tournament in the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup, while Keegan Petersen was a key figure in South Africa’s Test series victory over India. Therefore, it will not be an unfair decision regardless of whoever wins the January 2022 ICC Player of the Month award.
