Bangladesh’s coronavirus fatalities climbed to 8,428 on Wednesday after health authorities recorded 614 more deaths in the last 24 hours till this morning.
The total caseload rose to 547,930 with the 614 new cases, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the updated figures, the daily infection rate today stood at 3.74 percent which was 3.36 percent on Tuesday.
The overall infection rate also remained static at 13.40 percent on Wednesday as on Tuesday.
The mortality rate remained steady at 1.54% for the past few days, the DGHS said in a handout.
So far, 499,627 patients (91.18%) have recovered from the Covid-19.
Authorities have so far tested 40,89,336 samples, including 16,414 in the past 24 hours.
Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.
Vaccination drive in Bangladesh
Bangladesh launched its nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive on February 7.
By Tuesday, 3,341,505 people received the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The second dose has to be taken between 8 and 12 weeks of the first one.
The government is providing the vaccine for free. It signed an agreement with India’s Serum Institute for 30 million doses of the vaccine.
The institute will provide five million doses every month between January and June.
The people, who are 40 or above, can register for getting vaccinated at www.surokkha.gov.bd as the on-spot registration system has been revoked.
Besides, Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Wednesday said that the age limit for getting the coronavirus vaccine will be revised once more vaccine doses get available in the country.
Global Covid-19 Situation
The global Covid death toll is fast approaching 2.6 million amid a worldwide vaccination rollout.
The fatalities reached 2,548,573 while the total caseload mounted to 114,728,460 on Wednesday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
Covid-19 deaths crossed the milestone of two million on January 15.
The US leads with the most deaths followed by Brazil, Mexico, India and the UK. The North American country’s fatalities surpassed 500,000 on February 22.
According to the university data, the US has so far registered 28,717,558 cases with 516, 476 deaths.
Brazil ranks second worldwide after the United States in terms of the number of deaths from Covid and third in terms of the number of confirmed cases, after the United States and India.
The country has registered 10,646,926 cases and 257,361 deaths so far, as per the data.
Meanwhile, India’s total caseload reached 11,124,527 while the death toll from the virus mounted to 157,248 on Wednesday, according to official figures.
Mexico has recorded 186,152 deaths while in UK about 123,530 people have died so far from the virus.
