BMEA election: Sammilita Parishad announces manifesto

The Sammilita Parishad on Tuesday announced its manifesto for BGMEA election for 2021-23 term.

In a media briefing at a city hotel, panel leader Faruque Hassan read out the manifesto that included tackling COVID-19 impact, recovering the industry, developing small and medium apparel sector, and creating new markets.

He said they would play a role to increase the international market share and develop they country’s image globally.

“Though Bangladesh holds the second position in exporting RMG products, its market share is very poor compared to China. So, Bangladesh has a good chance to expand its market but it’s a big challenge,” he said.

Faruque said they would form exit policy from business and set up welfare fund for the owners.

“If elected, we’ll work to get international trade facilities. We’ll discuss actively with the government and EU so that Bangladesh gets duty-free export facility to EU up to 2031,” he added.

He said that they would appoint strong lobbyist to get duty-free access for RMG products in the USA.

“We’ll reform customs policy and automate import and export data. We’ll stop customs related harassments,” he said.

The panel leader also said if they are elected they would ensure the participation of BGMEA members in road shows and fairs in different countries and work to ensure duty-free export to Middle East and African countries.

“We’ll eliminate all export-related complexities. Besides, we’ll reform VAT and Taxes policies to reduce taxes at source. We’ll reform the labour law and improve communications with the leaders,” he added.

The Managing Director of Giant Group said they would work to improve skills of workers to tackle the impact of the fourth industrial revolution or 4IR.

Former president of BGMEA Abdus Salam Murshedy; former president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) and MP of Dhaka-10 Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin; and former BGMEA president Siddiqur Rahman also spoke there.

Sammilita Parishad and Forum are contesting the election this year. Earlier, Shadhinata Parishad joined with Sammilita Parishad.

Former Vice-President (Finance) of BGMEA ABM Shamsuddin is leading the Forum Panel. Current BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq is also contesting the election as a panel member of Forum.

The election to the apex trade body is scheduled for April 4.
